While the Pond Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (PMVFR) primarily handles medical, fire and vehicle calls within our own district, we also assist in county-wide responses and trainings. These county-wide actions allow the PMVFR to impact portions of Ashe County that we usually do not interact with. Some of these events include:
Major Fire Responses:
Cobble Creek Fire (2022)
PMVFR responded with several firefighters, one Engine and two tankers to the Cobble Creek fire in downtown West Jefferson NC in 2022. During this 14+ hour fight our crews:
- Participated directly in the attack on the fire
- Bolstered the tanker task force with a tanker
- Ran the water supply station at Frosty’s Choose and Cut pond for the duration of the fire
During this response we estimate we drafted approximately 400,000 gallons of water with our engine to supply the tanker task force. The Cobble Creek Fire involved 18 different Fire Departments from the surrounding area responded, dumping over 3 million gallons of water onto the fire. Of that 3 million gallons, 2.25 million gallons of water were shuttled onto scene via tankers filled from ponds, rivers and creeks.
Two Mile Fire (2016)
From Nov 20th to 27th, 470 acres burned in Southwestern Ashe County. All departments in Ashe County assisted with putting out this large wildfire. PMVFR provided two engines, and a tanker staffed by volunteers, and PMVFR stayed on-scene for two days until released by the Incident Command.
Ashe Medics Mutual Aid

PMVFR operates a BLS (Basic Life Support) Ambulance that acts as a backup to Ashe Medic’s ALS (Advanced Life Support) ambulances. When all available Ashe Medic ambulances are tied up and unavailable PMVFR is toned out to provide BLS Ambulance Service to nearby fire districts such as Lansing and Creston.
Training and Fire Prevention

PMVFR provides fire and rescue demonstrations for local schools, fire prevention talks, and helps the 5th and 6th grade students at Blue Ridge Elementary with fire science demonstrations.
